Berghain is a Berlin instiution and the best place to expereince Berlin's notorious minimal techno and weekend-long party scenes. Except on Mondays, their program runs throughout the week, but often on alternate days so check their website to see if there's anything on.
Set away from the rest of busy Freidrichshain in an old power station, Berghain is well worth a visit (their minimal techno line-ups are amongst the best in the city). This said, don't plan your night around it: they have a notoriously strict and difficult-to-crack door policy, refusing entrance to a big proportion of the hopeful souls enduring the 1 hour plus queues.
There are some ways to increase your chances, like trying not to overdress (leave the sequin dress and silk suit at home), not talking while in queue (seriously!) and not trying to enter in groups of more than three. Some say wearing a scarf helps, and as it's gay-friendly, looking gay can help.
Don't let this put you off though – despite their strict entrance policy, Berghain is always busy, and can be one of the best nights out in Berlin.
Also, if you don't get in the first time, not to worry: you can always go back on Sunday afternoon and try again. You won't have to wait for hours in line, and their weekend parties last until Monday morning, so keep this in mind if you're in Berlin for New Years or a long weekend.
