Amsterdam is a vibrant city and you can always find special events on week to week. Whether it's hot or cold; sunny or rainy, there's always something on.
The summer season is when the city explodes with outdoor festivals. Within 30 minutes traveling from the Center, there are large venues that host a range of events, from techno festivals, to niche parties, to food festivals.
In the winter season, the city doesn't stop either. Events shift indoors and club life goes in full swing.
A couple times a year, there are mega festivals that bring the city to life. All of Amsterdam - young and old, locals and tourists - go out onto the streets (and canals!) and party like there's no tomorrow on King's Day (April 27th), Gay Pride (first week of August), Amsterdam Dance Event (late October)
Amsterdam Dance Event is one of the most important annual electronic dance music events & the biggest club festival in the world for a week long. Here's how to have an amazing time.
AMSTERDAM BAR GUIDES
Amsterdam has a very active bar culture. What sets it apart is the easy access to the city's spectacular waterways and the local craft brews.
Many bars have waterside terraces that are perfect for the summer, and even in the winter the heating lamps make the atmosphere cozy. A couple of them even have a boat dock, so that you can pull up to the bar with your boat! Having a drink by the water is a must-do experience in Amsterdam.
And when in Amsterdam, you've got to try a local brew. There are bars that only serve Dutch beers. What's more is that craft beer brands like Troost and Brouwerij 't IJ not only sell their beer across the city, they even have their own bars.
AMSTERDAM CLUB GUIDES
Amsterdam is the #1 party destination in Europe, and for good reason! (And no, those reasons don't include the smoke shops and the red light district.)
First of all, many of the world's most famous DJs hail from Amsterdam - Armin van Buuren, Tiesto, Hardwell, you name it. These DJs are pioneers in the electronic dance music scene in big room house and trance. They have blossomed beyond their local market and are huge internationally. In fact, locally, the trends of music have it that techno has been the most popular genre for club music in the past couple of years. And there's no shortage of choices there.
Although techno is king in Amsterdam, other genres are well-represented as well. There are regular events with Hip Hop, R&B, and even Afrobeats.
For those that want to rock out to live music, large venues like Paradiso bring in great artists weekly. For those seeking indie vibes, check the programming at intimate alternative venues like the Water Hole.
